Take Action to Avoid Another Catastrophic Klamath River Fish Kill
August 5, 2014
Click here to take action now: Klamath salmon need your help! Last week, the Bureau of Reclamation announced that it would not release the preventative flows needed to avert a fish kill in the Klamath River. We need to convince decision-makers to release preventative flows into the Klamath and Trinity reservoirs to save the fall salmon run from river conditions that are even more severe than those that caused the country’s largest fish kill in 2002, when 60,000 salmon perished in the Klamath River. read more >>

Federal officials at the Department of the Interior recently announced that, unlike previous years, they will not release Trinity River water from Lewiston Dam to avoid a Klamath River fish kill. Juvenile and adult salmon are already dying in the Klamath and there still one month of summer until the fall run enters the river. If water is not released there is no doubt we will have a repeat of the 2002 Klamath River fish kill.
The add insult to injury PacifiCorp is applying to California for a water quality permit to keep their dams in the Klamath River, and are refusing to do an analysis of dam removal despite their stated support of the Klamath dam removal legislation. This comes just as the Klamath River is turning bright green from PacifiCorp's dams toxic algae blooms.
On August 19th we will demand that the state of California make PacifiCorp apply for a permit to remove these fish killing dams, and that the Department of the Interior release Trinity River water to stop a Klamath River fish kill.
